Hee-Young Lim | Cello
Praised by The Washington Post as “exceptional sense of lyricism, an artist to keep an eye on” Hee-Young Lim is the principal cellist of the Rotterdam Philharmonic. In addition to serving as Principal Solo Cellist, she has performed extensively as soloist with orchestra including the Deutsche Berlin Chamber Orchestra, the Budapest Radio Philharmonic, the Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra, the Jenaer Philharmonie, the Taurida Symphony Orchestra St Petersburg, the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra, the Poland's Plock Symphony, the Baden-Baden Philharmonie, the Württembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Seoul Symphony, the Korean Chamber Orchestra, the Incheon Symphony, the Chungju Philharmonic and the Sungnam Philharmonic Orchestra, Korean-American Youth Orchestra and among others. Ms. Lim's 2016-2017 season features a mix of concerto, recital and chamber music performances, as well as educational outreach activities.
Ms.Lim has performed in the Edinburgh festival, the Lucerne festival, the Stressa festival, the Rheingau festival, the Schleswig-Holstein festival and at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and numerous halls in Paris, Luxembourg, Brussels, Munich, Frankfurt, Köln, Hamburg, Turin, Milan and other major venues in Europe, as well as Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, Cité de la musique, Salle Gaveau, Philharmonie de Paris, Salle Cortot, ,Théâtre Adyar, Musée de l'armée aux Invalides, Berlin Philharmonie , Seoul Arts Center, Hong Kong City Hall and she has been the featured guest artist on the Korean Radio Broadcasting station, WETA, WFMT, KUHF, RTKK, Polski radio. Korea's MBC and YTN TV.
Upcoming performances later in the 16/17 season include engagements as soloist with Harbin Symphony Orchestra, giving the Premiere of Peter Susser's Cello Solo Suite in Reid hall in Paris, Samsung's Rising Star recital, Kumho Artist recital in Korea and Weimar Orchestra (Shostakovich Cello Concerto no.1).
Ms.Lim studied piano at age 4 before turning to the cello. At age 10, she was accepted to the Pre-College division of Korean National University of Arts and won many national competitions that resulted in entering special music school, "Yewon Arts School". As a young prodigy, she won numerous national competitions include First Prize at the Korea Times Competition, First Prize at the Kukmin Times Competiton, First Prize at the Seoul Symphony Orchestra Competition plus audience award, Grand Prize at Korean-American Youth Competition and First prize at Ehwa Press Competition, First Prize at Strad Magazine Comeptition, Yewon Arts School awarded her for excellence in Music and the most distinguished Alumni achievement Award. She made her debut as soloist with the Seoul Symphony Orchestra at age 12 and the same year gave a recital as a prodigy of Kumho Foundation.
She entered the Korean National University at age 15 where she was the youngest student ever to be accepted. after completing Bachelor's degree, she moved to the United States to further her education at the New England Conservatory. While at NEC, she had a chance to work privately with Bernard Greenhouse who praised her "one of the most gifted cellists I have heard in many years. She has proven herself to be capable of a great career."
Ms.Lim gave a debut recital at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC in 2007. A first-prize winner in many competitions including 1st Prize winner of the Washington International String competitions, First Prize winner, the 49th Sorantin String Competition, First Prize winner, the Barnett Competition in Chicago and Bach special prize, and 2nd Prize, the Kingsville String Competition and Ima Hogg International Competition. She performed at Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall as the Grand Prize Winner of the IBLA Internaitonal Competition in 2008. Upon her graduation at NEC, Ms.Lim got into Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris under Philippe Muller's class where she graduated with highest distinction. (mention très bien à l'unanimité) Laureate of Lutoslawski International Cello Competition (3rd Prize, 2011) in Poland, received finalist diploma at the Pablo Casals International Cello Competition. Carl Flesch Akademie has given her Brahms Prize and Lions Prize that led concerts engagements with the Baden-Baden Philharmonie several times. Laureate of the Verbier Festival Academy (Frans Helmerson) Kronberg Workshop (Heinrich Schiff), and has held Scholarship from Villa Musica in Germany and Cziffra Foundation in France. She is also a graduate of Hochschule für Musik «Franz Liszt» Weimar, earned Konzertexamen degree "mit auszeichnung" (Summa cum laude) while studying with Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt.
As an avid chamber musician, she has released a CD works by Jean Cras with Eraz Ofer (Concertmaster of Berlin Radio Orchestra), Grand Prix at the Forum Normandie Chamber Music Competition in France.
Ms.Lim currently plays Tecchler dated 1728 cello graciously given from the Rotterdam Philharmonic orchestra and her bow is made by Dominique Peccatte in 1845.
